Adam and Eve
The bible has been one of the most controversial text of all times. As I write this I would like to remind you I am a christian myself. I’m just open.. I am a devout christian that is a history nut. So, I like to ask questions.
We have always heard as Christians the beginning of humanity started with Adam and Eve. You know the story; the Garden of Eden, Eve ate the apple etc.. Though, what if I told you that Adam may have had a first wife, Lillith. Going back to the text, the Book of Genisis.. Chapter 1:27 (“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.”) This is also mentioned before the actual creation of Eve. According to the text, Eve which was made to be submissive to man because she came from Adams rib. Well going back to the text; when women was first mentioned, Lillith was created equally from the soil of the earth.
So, what happened?
Now, to find out more about Lillith I had to go to a different text.. The Torah.. In Jewish culture; the story is told that Lillith and Adam were created from dust, but problems came about when it was time for them to consummate their marriage. She believed that they were equal, in which they were. They were made the same way, at the same time. No one had to give anything away to create the other. So she didn’t want to be under him during sex, and you know he disagreed. At that moment, she decided to leave the garden of Eden to gain her independence. Then Adam told God that Lilith had left and God sent three angels, Senoi, Sansenoi, and Sammangelof, to retrieve her. The three angels found Lilith in a cave bearing children but Lilith refused to come back to the garden. The angels told her they would kill 100 of her children every day for her disobedience. It also said that because of this; she is responsible of robbing children of life (SIDS). It is also said that male children are at risk during the first 8 days of life (until circumcision) and females are at risk for 20 days. Although Lilith stole children’s lives in the night, she agreed not to kill the children who had amulets of either of the three angels.
After the angels’ departure, Lilith tried to return to the garden but upon her arrival she discovered that Adam already had another mate, Eve. Out of revenge, Lilith had sex with Adam while he was sleeping and “stole his seed.” With his seed she bears ‘lilium,’ earth-bound demons to replace her children killed by the angels. Lilith is also said to be responsible for males’ erotic dreams and night emissions. Another theory says that Lilith is impregnated, thus creating more demons by masturbation and erotic dreams.
Controversial topic
Honestly, it’s not far fetched.. Christianity hasn’t been the most favorable for powerful women, or free thinking women for that matter. Look at historically how they’ve treated women. Yes we are in a progressive age, but there are some churches beliefs that women are not supposed to be in the pulpit. Timothy 2:12; (“But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence”) The bible has always stated that women need to be submissive, obedient as well as silent to their husbands. Though, wondering if god originally made us in his image, how are woman supposed to be submissive to someone that we were made equally with.
