Come on guys..
Due to a recent Facebook post that went viral, there are actually people believing that the late entrepreneur Walt Disney, is to be unfrozen in December. Wait… I thought he was dead.. Yea he is, but of course when a person dies with a lot of money, craziness tends to circulate. Even though it has been debunked by Snopes, CNN, and other verifiable sources, this rumor continues to circulate. Though, have we really took a look at the company itself. We all know, the popular Mickey Mouse that comes on today, but the actual company itself. There has been speculation for years between rape allegations, and slave wages over seas. Though, you really don’t hear much about these things on the news, I mean how could a mainstream news outlet have time with so much going on now.
Lets start in 2012.. In 2012 a U.S. Citizen of Moroccan origin filed a lawsuit of discrimination because she was told that she couldn’t wear a hijab in a public position. She was also told she could wear a hat, or take a non-public position. She was harassed and had slurs thrown at her of course before her exit, but this is supposed to be the happiest place on earth. The ex employee also complained that her Christian co-workers had tattoos and wore ash on their head for Ash Wednesday and nothing was said to them by upper management. According to the ex employee, the company had a “look” policy and “certain looks” didn’t foot the bill.
Now keep in mind this isn’t the only incident where it involve a religious form of discrimination. There was another gentleman that was fired from the happiest place on earth because of the same “look policy” because he wore a turban. This man’s lawsuit actually charged that Disney had violated the Florida Civil Rights Act.
That’s on the employee side, I mean there are thousands upon thousands of stories that show Disney isn’t really the happiest place on earth.. Though for some people it is. Looking into old data on the company, in 1996 data shows that then CEO Michael Eisner was making $97,600 an hour as the companies head. Ok, so how does this get worse?
Well at that same token in 1996, they had all their toys assembled overseas. The wage that was paid was .05 to .18 cents an hour. Now these workers were assembling toys that were being sold in the United States at the time for at least $10. That’s like 3 to 4 days pay for them. Though we continue to support the giant because honestly our kids like the characters and we all grew up with Disney.
That doesn’t mean that we cant hold them accountable for their actions. Why cant Disney do right by their employees across the board. I mean, honestly would we want Walt to come back today? How do you think he would react to how his business has started going.
